As the rest of the South enjoyed glorious sunshine, the riders who arrived for Portsmouth Motocross Club’s eleventh summer series round wrapped up warm and tried to shelter from the rain that swept across the Marshfield circuit. But the excellent track preparations, watering and extra moisture from the sky resulted in a brilliant day of racing, without any sign of dust. The handful of riders who made the long journey to Tormarton put on a brilliant show of skill and speed.

Combining the VMX, AMX and AMX Novice classes, there was plenty to watch as the adults roared off the start line to tackle the hilly track. After quickly moving into the lead, Danny Iles was unstoppable, powering ahead of his rivals to win the first two races. Leading all the way until the penultimate lap, he catastrophically stalled the bike on the finish line, but soon had it going again to move back into second place, and finished the day as overall winner. Holeshotting the opening race pushed Leon Burt straight to the front of the pack for the first couple of laps, but a spill after the finish line lost him the lead. But after remounting, he moved his way back into second place. Burt chased Iles all the way in race two to finish second again. Scrapping hard with race three’s winner Jordan Moyle he kept his nerve to finish in third and secured second overall. Saying goodbye to the Kawasaki and racing his brand new KTM 250 2 stroke for the first time, Lee Wharton roared straight into the top group of riders, impressive riding keeping him well ahead of his rivals. Smooth overtaking moves pushed him into third place in race two, his best result of the day, and with two equally impressive fourth places added to his scores, he was rewarded with third overall. Steve Lyons was the front runner of the VMX class, a brilliant sixth in race one amongst the youngsters rewarding him the win. A welcome return to the Club saw Jordan Moyle have a disastrous opening race, stranded on the start line as the rest of the group sped away, but unperturbed by his setback he tore through the field at a blistering pace to finish in the top ten. An improved start to race two saw him well in amongst the top riders, finishing in fourth, but saving the best for last, he blasted into the top three from the off and snatched away the race win on the final lap, finally ending the day in further overall. Shaun Kerley had the opposite luck with brilliant starts seeing him moved into the lead, remaining in contention for a win to finish in third in race one. But he had to work hard in race two to move his way up from near the back of the pack into eighth place, and ended race three in sixth place to secure fifth overall. Ben Anstie was absolutely flying, grabbing the lead away from Kerley in the final race, with all three motos seeing him remaining in the top six, a sixth and two fifths rewarding him with sixth overall.

There was an almighty scrap for supremacy in the Senior class, but once again Dan Maxey received an early birthday present to snatch the overall win. Storming straight into the lead in the opening races secured him the wins, but he just couldn’t keep the rampaging Jordan Carrier from passing him in the final race, but he still pushed him all the way to finish in second and took home the overall victory. Carrier’s opening races were disappointing but still impressive as he fought hard with George Clarke for second place, crossing the line in third in each moto. But he saved the best for last and powered his way into the lead with a few laps to go, and kept hold of the lead to secure the win. Carrier secured second overall ahead of George Clarke. Clarke meant business out on the track, riding hard, endeavouring to catch Maxey in the first two motos, finishing second in both. Settling for third in the final moto he tied on points with Carrier to finish in third overall. Lewis Moyle joined in the fun at the front of the pack and was as impressive as ever, battling hard to secure his positions, passing the finish line in fifth, fifth and fourth to end the day in fourth overall. James Rennie was on top form, luck on his side throughout the day, and blasting into the lead, endeavouring to keep the chasing pack behind him, and still remained dominant within the top six in the first and last races, a brilliant fifth in the final moto ending his day on a high and he secured fifth overall ahead of David Roberts. The two riders battled head-to-head throughout the day, and although Rennie had the upper in the two races, Roberts, blasted ahead of him in the second race to finish up in sixth, and with another sixth in race three, he finished sixth overall.

Brilliant racing out at the front of the pack in the Inter Open class saw Ryan Monckton sweep the board with three wins, fighting hard to keep Michael Denton off his tail in races two and three. Daniel Lawler was a true pleasure to watch, not putting a wheel wrong throughout the day, a tremendous battle for second place in the opening race with Jack Sarll, but Lawler had the upper hand in the remaining races and three perfect third places secured him second overall. Sarll fought hard in the opening moto to slot nicely into second place, and chased Lawler hard all the way to the finish line in the remaining races to finish in fourth place. He ended the day in third overall. Michael Denton couldn’t have asked for a more perfect start to his day, straight into the lead in race one, holding off Monckton’s challenge until disaster struck and an off halfway through the race resulted in a broken clutch lever and left Michael trailing at the back of the pack. But races two and three made up for his disappointing first race, battling straight from the turn of the 5 second board into another head to head battle with Monckton, remaining in second place in both motos, even with a heavy landing in race two bringing tears to eyes, he persevered to the finish flag and with a thirteenth and two seconds, he still managed to finish in fourth overall. Scott Wigley was having a race on his own, nobody able to catch him, but he didn’t let off the throttle once trying to catch the top riders in all three motos, securing fourth place and two fifths and was rewarded for his efforts by finishing in fifth overall. An impressive ride from Sam Baggott saw him back to his best, and pushed his way straight into the top six, riding hard to chase down Wigley in all three motos, passing the chequered flag just behind all day, finishing in fifth, sixth and sixth to secure sixth overall.

The Autos tackled the daunting circuit with ease, the steep hills no problem for Cain Marsh who powered straight into the lead from the off in all three motos. Brilliant wins in the first two races secured him the overall win, narrowly missing out on a straight set but still finished in second in the final race. Liam Brosnan was on a charge as he chased down Marsh throughout the day, but took his chance in the final race to speed into the lead to secure the win and finished the day in second overall. Xavier Cook kept on the power to battle his way into third place, a great contest with Jamie Turner throughout all three motos, but three consistent third places rewarded him with third overall. Narrowly missing out on his trademark holeshots, Jamie Turner shot straight to the front of the class in the first and last race, only an inch away from taking the lead, but he remained near the front of the pack, consistent finishes rewarding him with three fourth places, and fourth overall on the day. Louie Wakefield had a great day on the track too, even though race two saw him saw him start off bringing up the rear, he only worked extra to fight his way through the pack to move into fifth, replicating his first and last race results, and secured fifth overall. A two-way battle between Ryan Taylor-Trueman and Scott Somerville saw the two riders chopping and changing positions throughout the day, but Taylor-Trueman snatched away sixth overall by just one point by finishing in sixth, sixth and seventh.

Non-stop action in the Inter 85 class, with riders off all around the track as they pushed themselves to the limit to secure a high placing. Camlann MacDonald was flying, leading from the ping of the elastic in race one to take the win. Just missing out on the win in race two, he led the race until the penultimate lap but still secured second place, then regained his winning position in the final moto to secure the overall win. With riders dropping like flies, Ryan Turner kept his nerve in the opening race to move into second position. Holeshotting race three, he kept the lead for the opening laps of the race, and remained strong at the front of the field until the chequered flag. A second and two fourths rewarded him with second overall. A heavy crash in race one left Christopher Nuttall having to work his way back through the pack, but commendably finished in fourth place. Race two unfortunately was a repeat of moto one, but a great effort moved him from the back of the pack into fifth. Race three saw him at his best, and chased MacDonald hard all the way to the finish line to finish in second, and secured third overall. An impressive performance from Jordan Kittow saw him stay consistently smooth throughout all three races, two brilliant third places rewarded him with fourth overall. Dan Griggs was once again flying and riding at his best, but an unfortunate spill in the opening race left him trailing at the back of the field. He redeemed himself to perfection in race two by charging to the front of the pack to win the race, and quickly moved into third position in the closing moto to snatch fifth overall. Jaiden Nichol powered his 150 around the track chasing down the front runners, and three consistent sixth places rewarded him with sixth overall.

Olivier Cook once again reigned supreme in the Junior class, easily bagging the first and last race wins, but crashing after a couple of corners on the opening lap of race two saw him having to power his way from the back of the pack moving into second place on the final lap, to secure the overall win. George Stocks first and last race didn’t go quite according to plan, stalling on the start in both, but he soon pushed his way to the front of the pack to finish in third and second respectively. But race two was his shining glory, holeshotting the race and after taking the lead mid-race he crossed the finish line in first place, and he secured second overall. Consistently at the front of the group, Liam Jones was once again dominant, brilliantly keeping hold of second place in the opening race. After leading race two, he remained in the top three in all motos to take home third overall. A three-way battle for fourth overall was in full flow behind the top three, with Jamie Griggs charging ahead of Ben Richard and Oakland Poulter to get the upper hand, two fourth places rewarding him with fourth overall. Poulter, improving with every meeting, was on a mission in the opening race, storming his way into fourth place, and adding a fifth in the final race secured fifth overall. Ben Richards had to work hard to gain fifth place in race two, battling all day with Bradley Wilson to secure the higher place, and with both riders tying on points, it was to be Richards who grabbed sixth overall, thanks to his fifth place.
