Swanmore Race Report
Report by Kay Turner
Portsmouth Motox Club
21st November 2010
Winter Series Round 2

A last minute change of venue due to the appalling weather during the week saw Portsmouth MX Club hold the second round of their winter series at Swanmore recently. Winter had truly arrived at the Corhampton track with sub-zero temperatures chilling everyone to the bone, but the riders braved the freezing conditions to tackle the track which was surprisingly dry after the amount of rain the South had suffered the week before.

A great turnout of Autos were out first, and the top three remained the same throughout the day, although Cain Marsh, Luke Williamson and Liam Brosnan all snatched a taste of victory, but Marsh was the overall victor on the day, three straight wins to secure the overall win. Williamson kept close to Marsh’s back wheel but couldn’t quite grab a win and three second places secured second overall. Brosnan took over the lead in race two but after getting taken out, he lost the lead and had to settle back into third place. With three thirds, he secured third overall. Louie Wakefield made a hard challenge on Oliver Cole’s fourth place, charging hard in the final race to take over the spot and secured fourth overall, with Cole finishing in fifth overall after two brilliant opening races, crashing out in the final race seeing him limping at the back of the field in thirteenth place, but still left the track in a top six position. Austin Wild had a good scrap throughout the day with Harry White and Vinnie Lewin, but with White’s unfortunate uphill crash, Wild grabbed the vital points needed to take over sixth overall.

With all three adult groups racing together, the action came thick and fast, and there was a four-way battle out the front between race one winner, Jake Hassell, race two winner, Gareth Padgett, race three winner Tom Moore and Leon Burt. But unbelievably Burt was the rider who came away with the overall win on the day, just missing out on first after gear problems in the final moto and stalling the bike denied him from keeping his lead. Moore pushed hard in races and took over the lead in the final race to grab second overall away from Hassell. Unfortunate spills denied him from replicating his first race victory but still secured third overall. Gareth Padgett was on the gas in each moto, and after Hassell crashed in the first race, he soon took over the lead. But three crashes denied him from staying out front. Race two saw him keep his head and keeping firmly placed on the bike, he roared into the lead and remained in front as the chequered flag waved him through. Remaining high up the leader board in race three, he secured a fourth place to take home fourth overall. With lapscorers unsure why he was shaking his head as he was riding brilliantly, Aaron Bowden was on fine form throughout the day, a brilliant fourth in race one his best result of the day and remaining high up in the top six for his remaining two races, he secured fifth overall. After a disastrous opening moto, Shaun Skeates had to work extra hard to work his way into the top six, and after a collision with Dan Strudwick on the final corner in the second moto, he moved into sixth place. Pushing harder in race three, he fought hard to keep fifth place with Bowden breathing down his neck and secured sixth overall.

The biggest group on the day provided some entertaining action from the ping of the elastic, with Daniel Maxey soon taking total control of the class, even will a spill at the start in race two leaving him working his way through the field, he still secured three straight wins and the overall victory. In his first meeting in the Senior group, Louis Schmidt was outstanding and a commendable performance which saw him lead the rest of the pack and finish second in races two and three, rewarded him with second overall. Jonathan Cole was flying trying hard to catch Schmidt, an unfortunate crash on the second lap in race two still rewarding him with his best result of the day to finish in third, and secured third overall. Chae Jenkinson will openly admit he had a nightmare of a day on the track, even though he looked mighty impressive as usual. With brilliant start he was soon at the front of the pack, but unfortunate spills denied him from placing higher. By race three he’d composed himself and pushed hard to the finish line to finish in third place, and finished up in fourth overall on the day. Connor Davis was a powerhouse on the track, storming straight into the top six from the off, battling it out with Jonathan Cole to keep his positions. Chasing him Cole home in all three motos, Davis finished in fifth, fourth and fifth to secure a brilliant fifth overall. Andrew Walker couldn’t have asked for a better start to his day, dominant at the front of the pack, finishing brilliantly in second place. But his disastrous remaining two motos put a dampener on his day, crashes and stalling the bike denying him from replicating his great opening race, after working so hard at the start of each race. But he still did enough to finish the day in sixth overall.

In the Inter Open class, Josh Coleman made it look all too easy, securing three straight wins with ease but still put in a determined effort to pull away as far as possible from his rivals. The overall win on the day went to Coleman. Karl Noble rode consistently well, keeping a rampaging Jamie Cox off his back wheel, and three second places rewarded him with second overall ahead of Cox who passed the finish line in third in each race to take home third overall. Dropping the “ones” off his race number obviously made Tallon Aspden a bit lighter and gave him the extra speed he needed to blast around the Swanmore circuit at a blistering pace, riding impressively throughout the day. Unable to catch Ryan Turner in race one he had to settle for fifth place, but pushed hard in the remaining races to work his way into fourth place and secured fourth overall. Ryan Turner was on fire in race one, narrowly missing out on a top three placing but still securing a brilliant fourth place. Race two started well, straight into the lead but after the first corner a gut-wrenching crash saw him hit the deck, medics rushing to his aide. But he wasn’t to be defeated and remounted the KTM to continue on and re-appeared again in race three to secure sixth place. A great result for Turner, finishing fifth overall on the day. Nathan Baggott had the upper hand over brother Sam in the first two motos, a brilliant fifth in race two his best position of the day. Swapping bikes in the final race to see how it suited him was a bit of a mistake as he got beaten by Sam, but he still secured enough points to finish sixth overall.

Aaron Gordon made no mistakes throughout the day, riding smoothly from the off, and secured all three wins to take home the overall victory. A three-way battle between Harry Pritchard, Camlann MacDonald and Christopher Nuttall saw all riders vying for the runner-up spot, but Pritchard pushed hard to secure two second places and the overall. MacDonald stormed into second place in the second race, a brilliant burst of speed seeing him get ahead of Pritchard, but an unfortunate spill on the last uphill before the finish flag saw him drop two places to fourth in the final moto, but he still secured third overall. Christopher Nuttall made it all work on the day, remaining seated and brilliant pace, speed and accuracy ensured he would finish highly. Keeping hot on Pritchard and MacDonald’s back wheels, he pushed extra hard in race three to secure third place, a great finish to his day, and he ended up in fourth overall. Jamie-Lee Burges was set for three straight fifth places, two impressive performances in the opening motos a great start to his day. But a disastrous start in race three saw him having to work his way through from the back of the pack, but still secured a top ten finish and ended the day in fifth overall. Jordan Clarke rode the races of his life, remaining high up in the top ten throughout the meeting. But his last race saw him pushing himself to the limit, chasing down the leaders with brilliant speed, and he worked his way into fifth place to secure himself a brilliant sixth overall.

Last out to go were the Juniors, with Charlie Cole and Liam Jones battling it out for supremacy. Cole sneaked ahead in the first and last races to secure the wins and was rewarded with the overall victory, with Jones claiming the second race win to claim second overall, much to his disappointment, but his riding was still superb to compensate for his discontent. George Stock was once again hot on the pace of the leading duo, and stepping up into second place in the second moto, he fought hard and remained in the top three all day to secure third overall. A great result for Ben Richards who took home fourth overall. Working hard from the off, he powered his way quickly into the top six, and gradually crept up the leaderboard as the laps went by. A fifth in the first was a great start, followed by two fourth places to reward his hard work on the track. Bradley Foley was a late entry and was a force to be reckoned with, battling hard to keep Richards off his tail in the opening race, but had to chase him hard in the remaining races, following him home in fifth in races two and three to secure fifth overall. Jordan Heavey was mighty impressive throughout the day, and after appearing in eighth place in race one, he stepped up a gear in the closing races, fighting hard to keep his Xavier Cook off his back mudguard, and two brilliant sixth places rewarded his efforts with sixth overall.
