Portsmouth MX Club
Winter Series Round 1
West Meon – 24th October 2010

The frozen ground and freezing temperatures definitely indicated the arrival of Portsmouth MX Clubs winter series, and round one was held at West Meon recently. The track was in perfect condition and a good turnout of riders put on a great display of racing for the shivering spectators.

A few new faces were appearing in each group as riders upgraded for the winter series, getting in a bit of practice ready for the summer to arrive. But the regular chequered helmet of Liam Jones was his usual presence at the front of the Junior class, punching the air with delight as he scored two wins, narrowly missing out on his hat-trick, but rode superbly to take home the overall win on the day. Charlie Cole was flat out behind Jones, trying everything possible to gain the lead, and did so in race two, finishing the day in the runner-up spot. George Stock rode consistently well, riding on the edge, mentally as well as on the track, nearly wiping out the track posts, but did an excellent job of maintaining third place in all motos to finish up in third overall. Ben Richards was once again hot on the heels of the leading pack, but bike problems after race one denied him a straight set of fourth places, after finishing high up in races one and three. But an amazing effort in race two to finish in fifth place riding on a borrowed auto 50cc was inspirational! His scores rewarded all his efforts with fourth overall. Callum Allison and Jordan Heavey scrapped hard for fifth place, a brilliant performance by both riders battling for supremacy on the track, but Allison powered his way into fourth place in the second race, his best result in the Junior class, which rewarded him with fifth overall. Heavey rode the best he has done all year, and with three top six places, a high placing was guaranteed. Sixth overall was his just deserved reward for his efforts on the track.

A good turnout of Autos took to the reduced track and the speed of the front runners was outstanding and awesome to watch, with Cain Marsh the powerhouse at the front of the field, storming around each lap with ease. Three straight wins rewarded him with the overall victory. Liam Brosnan and Luke Williamson battled it out for second spot, with Brosnan just having the upper hand finishing second in the first two motos and snatched second overall. Williamson wasn’t far behind and at a frightening pace hunted down the leading pair. He scored a second place in the final moto to finish the day in third overall. Oliver Cole rode consistently throughout the day, chasing the leading trio all the way to the end of race, a trio of fourth places rewarding him with fourth overall. Missing his partner-in-crime due to moving into the Junior class, Harry White still rode strongly storming into fifth place in the closing motos after doing so well in race one. After crashing he still placed seventh in race to end the day in fifth overall. Louie Wakefield was having an awesome day on the track, battling hard to pass White in each race, taking advantage in race one to finish in fifth place. Two sixth places added to his tally reward him with sixth overall on the day.

With all three adult groups riding together, the action came thick and fast, but there was no denying the overall winner on the day. In only his second meeting on the Suzuki 450, he powered around the track at a blistering rate, securing the lead within a couple of laps after the gate had dropped, and secured a huge lead in all three races to become overall winner on the day with three comfortable wins. Leon Burt’s arduous journey from Cornwall wasn’t a wasted one as he was keeping hard on the gas to chase Lock in each race, having to contend with the rampaging Gareth Padgett in race two, but still secured two second places and a third to finish up in second overall. After storming into third spot in the opening race and securing second in the second moto, Gareth Padgett was on a roll in race three, leading the pack from the drop of the gate, but a spill denied him keeping the lead but still remained in third place to take home third overall. Another impressive performance from Martin Bradbury who sped straight into the top three from the drop of the gate, narrowly missing out on a top three spot throughout the day but a brilliant fourth in race two rewarded him with his best placing of the day. Having to borrow a bike for his final race, he still managed to finish in seventh and finished the day in fourth overall. Gradually working his way into the top six as each race went by, Shaun Kerley ended the day on a high, crossing the finish line in fourth place to secure fifth overall. Aaron Bowden was back to his best at West Meon, storming into fourth place in the opening race. Slipping down the field in race two only spurred him on to push harder in race three, and cruising across the line in fifth place, he ended the day in sixth overall.

A blinding set of races came courtesy of the Senior class, but there was no disputing the overall winner on the day. Dan Maxey was outstanding as soon as the fifteen second board turned and the riders roared away from the start gate. Quickly taking the lead, Maxey remained dominant at the front of the group and kept an impressive lead over the remaining pack to secure all three race wins and the overall victory. The distinctive fluorescent orange crash helmet of Chae Jenkinson was shining brightly in the Autumn sun as he sped around the track at an impressive speed, pushing himself hard to catch the leader, two brilliant second places rewarding him with second overall. An awe-inspiring ride from Ryan Monckton who rode in his first meeting as a Senior rider, and totally annihilated the rest of the pack by stomping straight into third place from the first race and kept his nerve for the remaining races to replicate his impressive first race third to finish in third overall. Jack Bachelor was on fine form throughout the day, but a crash in race two saw him damaging his bike and left him “struggling” to finish in fifth place. But he needed no extra stick to power his way into fourth place on a borrowed bike in race three to add valuable points to his tally, and he ended the day commendably in fourth overall. Jordan Carrier was on Maxey’s back wheel on the first lap of the first race but by lap two he had disappeared out of sight. Rejoining the race in last place he worked his socks off to move into eighth place by the end of the race. Race two saw Carrier repeat race ones performance but he rode brilliantly to remain in second place throughout the race. Adding a fifth place in race three, he ended the day in fifth overall. Jonathan Cole ploughed through the field and straight into fifth place in race one, starting his day off well. Only dropping one place in the remaining races, he still kept on the pace of the front runners and ended the day in sixth overall.

With a number of smaller wheeled 85cc riders moving into the bigger wheeled class for the winter, it was going to be interesting to see who would reign supreme on the day. Jordan Bachelor once again took the lead in the opening moto but bike problems denied him from taking the overall, retiring early in the final moto. But an equally impressive performance by Josh Coleman saw him dominate the field in races two and three. Leading race one, much to the horror of his mum, he kept Bachelor within his sights once he was relegated to second place. But race two saw him power once again into the lead and kept hold of first place to take two wins, an impressive start in his new group to take the overall win. Gary Dalton was hot on the pace throughout the day, an excellent second place in the final moto rewarding him with second overall on the day after finishing well within the top six in the opening races. Olly Macey battled hard with Dalton, Charlie Robinson & Ryan Deick throughout the day, all riders vying for the highest positions, but Macey had the edge over them all to take away third overall. Narrowly missing out on a third placing in races one and three he still secured two fourths and fifth. Ryan Deick rode brilliantly all day, an amazing third in race two proving his capability on the track, and he was certainly on the gas in all his races to finish up in fourth overall on the day. Tallon Aspden was flying and battling amongst the front runners, and pushing hard to work his way through to a top three position, he narrowly missed out at the finish line to grab fourth place but a brilliant fifth in the final race was his best result of the day and rewarded him with fifth overall. Finally getting on the bigger wheeled bike to suit his height, Charlie Robinson looked far more comfortable and his positions reflected the change in bike as he powered into the top ten from the first race. A disastrous second race that saw him sitting on the side of the track until the chequered flag waved due to a puncture after riding so well denied him a higher place, but he redeemed himself in race three finishing in third place to secure sixth overall.

Two riders totally dominated the Inter 85 class, Aaron Gordon and Camlann MacDonald both sharing the limelight throughout the day. MacDonald took control of the races, leading from the drop of the gate but unfortunate spills denied him taking a win. Gordon rapidly sped into the lead and took control of the race to secure all three race wins and the overall victory. MacDonald didn’t hold back in trying to regain his lead and fought hard throughout the races to keep up with Gordon and followed him home in second place to finish the day in second overall. In his first meeting in the class, Olivier Cook continued his domination at the front of the pack and quickly sped into the top three in his first race, passing the chequered flag in second place. Battling hard in his remaining races he finished in fourth place to secure third overall. Harry Felton rode the races of his life, starting off brilliantly straight into the top three from when the gate dropped and although he slipped back a couple of places, he rode awesomely in race two to finish in third place. His two other top six placings rewarded him with fourth overall. Oliver Wing kept on the gas to stay high up the leader board, battling hard to secure his fifth place overall ahead of Oakland Poulter who was riding brilliantly throughout the day. Two seventh places ensured sixth overall was his.
