| Kennett be any hotter?! Report by Kay Turner Portsmouth MX Club Round 5 Summer Series Images Courtesy of Click466.co.uk
Portsmouth MX Club couldn’t have wished for a more perfect weekend of weather when they raced at West Kennett recently, although the scorching heat did cause a problem midday, with the dust being kicked up by the bigger groups. A great turnout of riders saw the start gate stretched to its limit but made for some awesome racing from start to finish. A good line-up of Junior riders were the first to the start-line, amazing speed from Charlie Cole once again ensuring he would take first spot in all three motos. Nobody could catch him in and he snatched away all race wins to take home the overall victory. A bad crash in race two denied Liam Jones from securing a straight set of runner-up places, but fought gallantly to move up to fifth place in the race. Races one and three saw him push hard to secure two seconds and finished the day in second overall. A great tussle between Lewis Cloud and George Stock pursued behind the front two, but Stock had the upper-hand, race two seeing him ride at his best to move into second place, and remaining high up in the ranks in his other races, he secured third overall.
The Autos were out next with Luke Williamson and Liam Brosnan wowing the crowds with their speed and mastery of the track. Williamson kept on full throttle in each moto, winning each race with pure precision to take home the overall. Brosnan was hot on Williamson’s back wheel, awaiting the opportunity to sneak into the lead, but rode well enough to secure three second places to finish up in second overall. An impressive effort from Ollie Cole saw him chasing the leading duo, consistent riding ensuring he placed highly and finished the day in third overall.
The start-line was crammed in the next race with the VMX, AMX Novice and EVO riders bar-to-bar waiting for the 15 second board to turn. The front of the pack was dominated by VMX riders, with Darren Noyes securing top spot with two wins. An awesome start from Darren Hansford who stormed into the lead in race one, ensuring he grabbed the first win, but had his work cut out in the remaining motos, but still battled hard to finish in third place and secured second overall. A bad start again from Martin Bradbury saw him having to claw his way through the field in the first race, but still managed to finish fifth. In the remaining motos, he was within a whisker of taking over the lead, pushing Noyes right to the wave of the finish flag, securing two second places to end the day in third overall.
Bruce Walker was the overall winner in the AMX Novice class, a brilliant position in race two ensuring he was the leading rider in his group, two seconds and a great first rewarding him with the win. Getting caught up in the first corner pile-up scuppered Simon Whites chances of grabbing the overall after his impressive first race win, but still powered his machine home to finish in second overall. Fully recovered after his huge crash at Marshfield a fortnight ago, Robert Grant bounced back at full speed, working his way through the field as each race went on. But an impressive effort in race three saw him lead the Novice class to grab a win, which rewarded him with third overall.
A handful of EVO riders joined in the fun in the blazing sunshine, with Louis Reid again the clear winner of his class with three wins. New addition to the club, Steve Kendrew after a slow start edged his way further up the field to finish in second place with David Horsell securing three consistent thirds to finish in third overall.
The AMX was a strong line up with the likes of Jackson Evans, Rob Muscat, Daryl Bolter, Gareth Padgett, George Purchase, Mark Young & Wildman Willis all vying for supremacy on the track. Evans made an effortless jaunt around the track, although having to work his way into the lead in race one after Padgett stormed to the front, but by mid-race he was in first and remained at the front in all three motos to secure the overall win. Muscat was flat out in all motos, taking the lead in the final moto and charging hard after to try to catch Evans, finishing runner-up in races two and three to secure second overall. Brilliant starts ensured Padgett would finish high up the leader board, and a near-faultless day on the track rewarded him with third overall, minus a side panel however, but his determined effort on the track saw him finish in second, third and third.
A tight squeeze on the start-line for the Senior class as a full line-up revved eagerly waiting for the gate to be released. Ross Churchill’s speed was as blistering as the heat and stormed into the lead in races two and three, narrowly missing out on three straight victories, but still did enough to secure the overall win. After holeshotting race one, Dan Maxey stayed in the lead until the chequered flag wave him through the finish. A couple of slip-ups in his remaining motos denied him repeating his first race success but a third and a fourth added to his win rewarded him with second overall. Even with mechanical problems and a spill, Chae Jenkinson was on top form, pushing his way into the runner-up spot in moto three, after finishing in third and fourth, to secure third overall.
The small and big wheeled 85 riders joined forces to pack the start gate but it was a smaller wheeled machine that completely dominated the pack. Henry Siddiqui totally annihilated the field, storming straight into the lead and remained first in all three motos. A perfect result for a perfect ride, victory overall going to Siddiqui. Racing his new bike for the first time didn’t hinder Tom Gathercole, racing high up in amongst the bigger riders, finishing second in motos one and three in his class to finish a brilliant second overall. Chris Nuttall was flat out in race two, a brilliant ninth in the combined group, but an awesome second in his class to be rewarded with third overall.
In the big wheels, there was no stopping Michael Denton, who rode at his best remaining in the top three throughout the day. A first, second and third rewarded him with a much-deserved overall victory. A welcome return to Oliver McMurray after having to sit out due to injury, he looked back to full fitness, as he secured first in the opening moto. Staying on the gas in race two he finished second, and secured enough points to finish second overall. Dean Simmons tasted victory in race three, pushing his way in front of McMurray and Denton, and ended the day in third overall.
