“Great Scott!”
Report by Kay Turner
Portsmouth MX Club
Rd 11 Summer Series

A blistering hot day and great racing was a perfect combination for Portsmouth Motocross Clubs recent championship round at Foxholes near Salisbury, another good turnout for the Club with some exceptional racing providing the watching crowds with excitement from start to finish.

In the Inter 85 class, David Keet put on an impressive show, winning the opening two races with ease, but in the final moto Bradley Flagg took charge of the race, narrowly missing out on a win, but Keet stormed into the lead with only a lap to go to secure all race wins and the overall victory. Flagg was equally impressive on the track, breathing down Keet’s tailpipe to bag three second places and second overall. Tom Gathercole put in a perfect performance, not putting a wheel wrong, and charging straight to the front of the pack from the drop of the gate, and chased the leading duo home in each moto to finish the day in third overall.

Some top-class racing came courtesy of the Junior riders, with Charlie Cole once again securing a couple of race wins, some breathtaking bar-to-bar racing with Liam Jones. But a nasty spill denied him taking the overall win. Tyler Rowe stormed around the circuit, and even though he didn’t bag a win, his high placings rewarded him with the overall victory, two seconds and a fourth enough to give him the win. Daniel Sultana got in the thick of it at the front, battling hard with George Stock to gain the higher position, with Sultana successfully grabbing two third places to secure second overall. Being involved in the huge crash with Cole in race one denied Liam Jones from snatching away the overall win, but a brilliant ride in race two saw him lead the race, and even managing to drop it on the last corner he still won to secure third place.

A good Auto line-up saw the little ones tackle the entire circuit, and it was a walk in the park for Luke Williamson who showed the dusty track no mercy to wow the crowds with his style and speed. Three perfect race wins secured him the overall victory. Liam Brosnan was hot on his heels and again rode a great set of races, securing three runner-up spots to take home second overall. Harry White and Ollie Cole battled it out behind the front two, but a few too many spills denied White from grabbing the last top three spot, Cole staying firmly placed on the bike to finish in third overall.

With the gate close to bursting point in the VMX and AMX Novice group, the action was non-stop around the track, with the older riders taking charge of the races. Matt White totally dominated the opening motos but didn’t have finally succumbed to the pressure in race three as Tony Hale had pushed him hard throughout the day and took his chance to take the lead and held on to take the chequered flag. But White’s powerful performances in the first races secured him the overall. Hale piled on the pressure in the later stages of the races and finished in second, but bagged the last race win to take home second overall. Rapid starts ensured Kevin Plumley would finish highly and leading the race bode well for him, and hard battles with Shaun Brooker saw him having to work extra hard to snatch the final top three place away from Brooker.

Scott Sanders was again unbeatable in the Novice class, securing all three first places and rode exceptionally well in race two to finish fourth in the combined class. Sneaking into the top ten in the final race as the dust flew, Louise Powell held her own in the strong field, and secured second overall in the class as the track started claiming victims, Matt Smith being one of them, after two great opening motos saw him finish second behind Sanders, but crawling in at the back of the field in race three ruined his day, but still managed to secure third overall.

Jackson Evans totally annihilated the AMX field, charging straight into the front and pulled out a commanding lead for the entire race. Three comfortable wins rewarded him with the overall victory. Jake Hassell showed no signs of being out of the game for so long as he put in an impressive performance in each moto, pushing the Kawasaki hard to finish top three throughout the day, a great second place in race two securing second overall. Mark Young was hoping for better luck after such disappointment over the last few meetings and proved what he is capable of as he secured two second places in the first and last to finish the day in third overall.

Still on a high from his victory at Bere Regis, Jordan Carrier showed no signs of taking it easy as a great performance saw him moving into the lead in the Senior class, remaining dominant in each race to once again secure all three race wins and the overall victory. Chae Jenkinson had bad luck in the opening moto after storming into the lead but pushed hard in the two other races, keeping Carrier within his sights to end up in the runners up spot, finishing the day in second overall. Louis Schmidt put on a brilliant show, an inspiring second place in the opening race, but had to battle throughout the day with Ryan Butler, but kept one step ahead of him to finish in third overall.

The last group to take to the track were the Inter Open riders, and Josh Coleman remained dominant and unbeatable as he eased to three wins throughout the day, making light work of the track at a blistering pace. Michael Denton was on top form, a slight slip up in race two denying him three second places, but remaining prominent at the front of the pack he finish the day in second overall. An almighty scrap took place for third place between Cam MacDonald, Beth Farmer and Gary Dalton, all three riders bashing bars to grab the last top three spot, but with a commanding second place in race two, MacDonald tasted the victory and finished third overall.
